Washington, CT – March 7, 2017 – Shepaug Valley School student Olivia Lautier attended the TD BankNorth Garden on Thursday, March 2, for a job shadowing opportunity in the control room during the Boston Bruin vs. New York Rangers hockey game. The eleventh grade student received a press pass and spent the first two periods shadowing Mike Beilke, the Director and Control Room Video Producer at TD Garden. The final period, she was allowed in the camera pit where she shadowed Camera 1 operator Jonathan Goltsis. She even manned the camera a few minutes during the game.
“I enjoyed it so much. It was the time of my life and everyone was so nice,” said Olivia Lautier about her experience.

Before the game, Lautier was given a tour of the press deck, including the control room and press booths. On the press deck, she even met Rangers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster Sam Rosen, who signed her jersey and told her to “stick with what you are doing, and never give up on your dreams.”

“This job shadowing experience helped me learn I am most interested in the live broadcasting aspect of hockey – being on camera and conducting interviews with players and fans. I put a lot of effort into finding a job shadow I felt was a potential career for me in the future, and it really paid off because I discovered what I do want to do, and what I don’t want to do in the field of live sporting events,” Lautier reflected.

Lautier is a student in Shepaug’s Digital Media Communications filmmaking class. She has produced several films this year, including a news package, stop-motion fictional short, and public service announcement. Shepaug’s College and Career Center, headed by Michael McManus, has a yearly junior job shadowing program that places students in job shadow experiences in dozens of different fields.
